Wow, this project is so overdue. Massively overdue. There’s a big story about being assigned this and the struggle I had figuring it out but I’m too relieved to have finished it to get into that yet. I’ll do a process post to show how drastically this has changed (it’s very, very drastic) soon.
What I can say is that this is an unofficial spec piece for The Folio Society from when I met the art director in London a couple of years ago. I piled everything I wanted to push myself to do into this piece: drama, expressive faces, character design, forced perspective, strong lighting, patterns, scene-building. And in the end, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
And if you haven’t read East of Eden or thought you hated Steinbeck as a teenager, I highly encourage it. This is a masterpiece of a novel.
